Architetti italiani all’estero: essere in movimento è parte del DNA dell’architetto. La modernità ha formato una vera e propria “Generazione Erasmus” che non ha fissa dimora ma si sposta a seconda delle suggestioni e delle opportunità di crescita.
Sono ormai tantissimi gli architetti italiani all’estero che hanno trovato soddisfazioni e successi mondiali: alcuni di loro sono ormai delle vere “Archistar“, altri sono giovani speranze che iniziano a mettersi in discussione con progetti innovativi. Abbiamo selezionato alcuni dei più brillanti architetti italiani all’estero: un orgoglio creativo tutto made in Italy.
Benedetta Tagliabue
In Spagna incontriamo Benedetta Tagliabue, rinomata architetta dello studio EMBT. Laureata a Venezia, dopo aver studiato a New York, si trasferisce a Barcellona nel pieno della trasformazione per le Olimpiadi. Da qui inizia una carriera piena di successi, come il Mercato di Santa Caterina e la Torre Mare Nostrum. La dimensione internazionale esplode con la progettazione del Parlamento Scozzese a Edimburgo e con il Padiglione Spagnolo per l’Expo 2010 di Shangai.
Fabrizio Barozzi
Chi invece si sta affermando nel panorama architettonico internazionale è Fabrizio Barozzi, classe 1976, già vincitore del Premio Giovane talento dell’Architettura Italiana 2013 promosso dal Consiglio Nazionale degli Architetti. Fondatore dello studio EBV insieme al catalano Veiga, Fabrizio Barozzi sta ottenendo numerosi successi internazionali. La vittoria in tre concorsi (Museo di Belle Arti di Losanna, Museo a Coira, Scuola di Musica a Brunico) rendono questo studio italo/spagnolo uno dei più interessanti nella scena architettonica attuale.
Nàbito
Lo studio Nàbito nasce dalla volontà di Alessandra Faticanti e Roberto Ferlito di occuparsi di sostenibilità nell’architettura e strategie territoriali in urbanistica. Sono inoltre autori di straordinari oggetti di design come “mini kitchen” e “smart-table”.
MAB Architettura
MAB Arquitectura, fondato da Floriana Marotta e Massimo Basile nel 2004, basa il suo approccio sulla ricerca di soluzioni uniche, dalla forte identità e legate al contesto in cui sorgono. Lo studio ha ricevuto molteplici riconoscimenti tra cui il premio INARCH-ANCE 2014 per il progetto di social housing a Parigi.
Sandro Marpillero
Altra destinazione apprezzata dagli architetti italiani all’estero sono gli Stati Uniti. Uno degli esponenti di maggior spicco tra loro è Sandro Marpillero, fondatore dello studio MPA, professore associato di “architecture and urban design” alla Columbia University; i suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati su importanti testate come il New York Times e Casabella.
Carlo Ratti
Tra gli architetti italiani all’estero, anche Carlo Ratti ha saputo trovare la sua base negli Stati Uniti. Insegna presso il MIT di Boston dove dirige il Senseable City Lab ed è uno dei talenti italiani più celebrati, inserito da Wired nella lista delle 50 persone che cambieranno il mondo.
Lot-Ek
Localizzato a New York è anche lo studio Lot-Ek, fondato da Ada Tolla e Giuseppe Lignano. Questo giovane gruppo ha già realizzato diverse installazioni in musei di prestigio come il MoMa, il Guggenheim e il MAXXI e ha saputo utilizzare in modo intelligente e innovativo i container in architettura.
Umberto Napolitano e Benoit Jallon
Situato in Francia, lo studio LAN, fondato da Umberto Napolitano e Benoit Jallon, è autore di un interessante progetto di housing ad Amburgo e di un edificio per uffici a Lille che li fa entrare di diritto nella classifica degli Architetti italiani all’estero più interessanti.

Italian Architects living and working abroad: be on the move is part of the architect’s DNA. Modernity has shaped a real “Generation Erasmus” that has no fixed abode, but moves depending on the suggestions and opportunities.
Nowadays, many Italian architects have found satisfaction and worldwide success abroad. Some of them are real “Archistar” while others are young hopeful people that start to do a bit of soul searching with innovative projects. We have selected some of the most brilliant Italian architects living abroad: a “made in Italy” creative pride.
Benedetta Tagliabue
Benedetta Tagliabue, well-know architect working for the EMBT studio, currently lives in Spain. She graduated in Venice and after studying in New York, she moved to Barcelona during the transformations of the city for the Olympiad. From here it begins a successful career, creating iconic buildings such as the Santa Caterina Market and the Torre Mare Nostrum. Her international dimension explodes with the design of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the Spanish Pavilion for Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
Fabrizio Barozzi
Fabrizio Barozzi, born in 1976, recently has emerged in the international architectural scene by winning the “Premio Giovane Talento dell’Architettura Italiana” in 2013 promoted by the Consiglio Nazionale degli Architetti. Founder of the EBV studio together with the Catalan Alberto Veiga, Fabrizio Barozzi is getting numerous international successes. The victory of three contests (Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, Chur’s Museum and School of Music in Brunico) makes this Italian/Spanish studio one of the most interesting in the current architectural scene.
Nàbito
Alessandra Faticanti and Roberto Ferlito founded the Nàbito studio in order to deal with sustainability in architecture and spatial strategies in urban planning. They are also authors of extraordinary design objects such as the “mini-kitchen” and the “smart-table”.
MAB Arquitectura
The MAB Arquitectura, founded by Floriana Marotta and Massimo Basile in 2004, bases its approach on finding unique solutions, having a strong identity and linked to the context in which they arise. The study has received numerous awards including the INARCH-ANCE award, in 2014, for the project of social housing in Paris.
Sandro Marpillero
The US is a popular destination among Italian architects who decided to live and work abroad. One of the most prominent members among them is Sandro Marpillero, founder of MPA studio. He is also an associate professor teaching “Architecture and Urban Design” at the Columbia University. His works have been published in major newspapers such as the New York Times and Casabella.
Carlo Ratti
Among Italians architects living abroad, Carlo Ratti too succeeded in finding his headquarter in the United States. He currently teaches at MIT where he directs the Senseable City Lab and he is one of the most celebrated Italian talents, posted by Wired on the list of 50 people who will change the world.
Located in New York there is also the Lot-Ek studio founded by Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano. This young group has already carried out several installations in prestigious museums such as MoMA, Guggenheim and the MAXXI. They made an intelligent and innovative use of cargo-ships in architecture.
Umberto Napolitano and Benoit Jallon
Located in France, the LAN studio, founded by Umberto Napolitano and Benoit Jallon, is the author of an interesting housing project in Hamburg and an office building in Lille which made them come right in the ranking of the most attractive Italian architecture abroad.
So there are plenty cases of Italian architects living and working abroad, and they all tell a story: even far from home it is possible to achieve important goals and succeed in doing what you have long studied for.
