Esami, l’irresistibile serie di Edoardo Ferrario 

Nelle diverse università italiane non si parla d’altro.
No, non c’entrano riforme nè ulteriori tagli ai bilanci. L’argomento che tiene banco nei diversi Atenei è “Esami”, la serie web che sta spopolando su YouTube.
Ideata e recitata da Edoardo Ferrario, attore comico con un passato in diversi programmi televisivi, questa serie sta rappresentando lo sfaccettato, e a volte surreale, mondo dell’Università italiana.
Studenti dalla lacrimazione volontaria, professori frustrati e pronti a vendere voti e assistenti decisamente distratti. Ogni puntata è attesa spasmodicamente da tutti gli studenti, che si domandano quando arriverà il video dedicato alla loro facoltà.
Abbiamo scambiato una piacevole chiacchierata, ricca di citazioni dai suoi video, con Edoardo Ferrario, per conoscere meglio questa serie fenomeno e il talento comico che c’è dietro.

Edoardo, prima di tutto complimenti per questa serie. Com’è nata l’idea di “Esami”?

Tutto è nato, molto semplicemente, facendo l’università.
Durante gli anni dell’università mi sono reso conto che, con i miei colleghi, si parlava soltanto di esami. L’unica cosa che ci animava erano questi discorsi su esami assurdi, professori e quant’altro. Ognuno aveva aneddoti particolari sulle proprie facoltà.
Io ho iniziato a fare comicità da vari anni, il primo anno di università mi sono iscritto ad una scuola di scrittura che c’è a Roma. Ho iniziato a scrivere degli sketch, a fare stand-up comedy. Per questo avevo un po’ di esperienza alle spalle e mi sembrava che l’università, e in particolare gli esami, fossero terreno fertile per gli sketch.
L’esame di per sé sembra già uno sketch, quando inizia, quando finisce, ha una struttura narrativa molto precisa, che si presta alla comicità. Per questo mi è sembrata una buona idea scrivere una web serie sull’Università. Mi divertiva molto, anche perché mi dava la possibilità di interpretare i personaggi che è la mia più grande passione.
L’ho proposta ai due registi della serie, che sono Matteo Keffer e Maurizio Montesi, che si sono dimostrati entusiasti. Abbiamo pensato ai personaggi e alla regia, ho scritto le sceneggiature, poi siamo andati al Dams e l’abbiamo girata.

Ed è stato un successo travolgente!

Si, sta andando veramente bene. Noi siamo molto contenti e nemmeno ce lo aspettavamo a dirti la verità. È stato un po’ un salto nel vuoto, perché la forma è un po’ particolare, io che interpreto entrambi i personaggi in molti sketch non era scontato che piacesse.
Probabilmente mancava un prodotto del genere, una serie che parlasse in maniera sincera dell’università.
Mi sono divertito molto ad andare sul tecnico, ma facendo puntate che fossero comprensibili a tutti, anche a chi non facesse quella facoltà. Poi se la fai ti diverti il doppio perché tocca delle cose tue.
Siamo davvero contenti per come sta andando, c’è stata un’ottima accoglienza del pubblico.

I tuoi personaggi sono diventati dei fenomeni virali: penso a il Professore di Filosofia, Amedeo La Potta, all’assistente di Economia, Massimiliano Marzocca, o il Pips. Come vivi il successo di queste tue “creature”?

Adesso mi sembra di avere molta più popolarità rispetto a quando andavo in televisione. Devo dire che mi ha fatto molto piacere che i personaggi siano stati accolti in questa maniera così spassionata.
Un po’ mi spaventava l’idea di interpretare questi personaggi e invece è andata benissimo. Per dirti ci sono persone che mi scrivono “Lei non sa una sega!”. Un ragazzo a Grosseto mi ha mandato una foto dove hanno scritto sul muro “Guardie sbo, Infami sbo”. È molto divertente.
Poi ci sono personaggi come l’assistente di economia, che è il mostro di Via Cassia…

Ecco, quello mi sembra proprio il tipico romano…

Quella è proprio la Roma Nord sporca. Io provengo da quegli ambienti e lo conosco molto bene.
Si muove tra la Cassia, Vigna Clara e il Fleming. Fa Corso Francia avanti e indietro. Quella parte finale mi diverte sempre tanto, mi fa ridere ogni volta perché racconta molto del personaggio.

Senti ma invece, il cd dei Lokka Ripka quando esce?

Ci stiamo lavorando! Abbiamo parlato con loro, con il loro agente, il quale ci ha dato buone notizie.
Il primo singolo ha avuto un discreto successo.
Loro poi sono tre ragazzi molto bravi, sono cresciuti nella scena underground di Helsinki, si sono imposti fin da subito. Siamo sulla buona strada. Bisogna vedere quanti soldi vogliono, ma siamo fiduciosi che arriveremo ad una transazione che soddisferà tutti.
La puntata li ha resi molto noti, adesso vediamo come proseguirà.

Considerando che Helsinki è la nuova Berlino, pensi che Massimiliano Marzocca la consiglierebbe per le vacanze di Pasqua?

Mah guarda io ti consiglio Bangkok più che Helsinki. Anche se a Bangkok si mangia di merda, ti dico la verità. Allo stesso tempo ti potrei pure dire Rio. Ci stanno delle mete interessanti per questa Santa Pasqua.

Ma Cuba invece?

Mah Cuba giusto per le Morositas. Non so se t’è mai piaciuta Cuba ma io ti consiglio le Morositas.

Tornando seri, volevo chiederti: com’è stato lavorare con Sabina e Caterina Guzzanti?

Guarda per me è stato un onore. Io ero un grande ammiratore di Corrado, Sabina e Caterina, ancora prima di lavorare con loro.
Sabina è stata la prima comica con cui ho lavorato in televisione, per me è stata più di una soddisfazione. Oltre al fatto di lavorare in tv, l’ho fatto con un’artista straordinaria che mi ha dato grandissima fiducia sui testi e le interpretazioni. Tutti gli autori mi hanno dato fiducia, i miei pezzi non sono stati cambiati, che è una cosa che in televisione non succede molto spesso. Io la ringrazio sempre molto perché è stato un esordio fantastico e non avrei potuto chiedere di meglio.
Anche con Caterina mi sono trovato benissimo, lei è bravissima e poi mi ha dato la possibilità di fare il Pips.

Che è un personaggio geniale!

Il Pips è un grande! Interpreta la realtà a suo modo e alla fine ha sempre ragione lui. Ha una visione distorta del mondo, ma è attento nelle sue considerazioni.

Tu invece, tra tutti questi personaggi, a quale ti senti più vicino?

Mah guarda, mi sento più vicino allo studente di Economia. Sono un tipo tranquillo mentre i personaggi che interpreto sono molto sopra le righe.

Anche i coatti che studiano Giurisprudenza fanno molto ridere…

Si, loro sono molto divertenti. Sono dei personaggi che in facoltà da me ho visto spesso. Mi piaceva questo approccio molto street alla Giurisprudenza. Questi che arrivavano vestiti da rapper e poi prendevano 30 e lode a tutti gli esami! Da lì poi è nata la puntata.

Che poi trasporre le cose che uno vede nella realtà nella comicità è la cosa più divertente.

Certo, si tratta dell’approccio osservazionale alla comicità, quello che ho sempre avuto e che mi diverte tantissimo. Quando tu racconti cose che esistono il pubblico riconosce ciò di cui stai parlando.
Ovviamente poi in Esami abbiamo reso tutto molto surreale, come il professore di Filosofia o la scena del rapimento di Luigi Di Capua. Però parte tutto da una base esistente e questo meccanismo permette di riconoscere le cose su cui sto costruendo la puntata.

Sono curioso di sentire il tuo giudizio sull’uso della luce nelle fotografie di Marzia Pellegrino.

Bè è un uso magistrale, che le è valso una personale al MoMa, come tu sai. Lei è una grandissima artista. Noi vorremmo organizzare una personale su Marzia Pellegrino a Roma. Magari un aperitivo a Monti, con bicchieri di vino e foto di Marzia appese con le catenelle al muro.

Mi sembra un’ottima idea! Mentre quali sono i progetti di Edoardo Ferrario per il futuro?

Ora dobbiamo finire di pubblicare le nuove puntate di Esami. Per il futuro vedremo, abbiamo molti progetti. Io continuo a fare serate dal vivo a Roma, il 30 aprile sarò alla Locanda Atlantide e siete tutti invitati.

“The WalkMan” si pone come obiettivo quello di lasciare spazio e visibilità ai giovani emergenti in qualsiasi campo artistico. Cosa ti senti di suggerire a chi ha deciso o sta decidendo di investire la propria vita nella creatività?

Di essere spontaneo e di credere molto nelle cose che si amano. È un periodo molto particolare in cui il pubblico ha fame di contenuti nuovi, di freschezza. Il pubblico sta cambiando ed è molto aperto ai contenuti originali. Non bisogna spaventarsi dal proporre qualcosa che non è mai stato proposto, che non si sa come andrà perché non c’è un riferimento precedente. Io consiglio di credere molto in sé stessi, di portare avanti le proprie idee. Il periodo è interessante, fervido di contenuti.

There is a lot of talk about it around the different Italian universities.
No, nothing to do with reforms or more budget cuts. The topic holding forth in the various universities is “Esami” (exams), the YouTube big hit web series. Created and played by Edoardo Ferrario, a comedian with a background in several television programs, this series represents the multi-faceted, and sometimes surreal, world of Italian university. Students with voluntary tearing, teachers frustrated and ready to sell notes and very distracted assistants. All students frantically wait for the next episode, wondering when will the video dedicated to their faculties be uploaded.
We had a pleasant small talk, full of quotes from his videos, with Edoardo Ferrario, to better understand this phenomenal series and the comedic talent behind it.

So, Edoardo, first of all congratulations for this series. How did the idea of “Esami” arise?

It all started simply from the university. During the years at the university I realized that, with my mates, we only talked of the exams. The only things animating us were these talks about absurd exams, professors and so on. Everyone had stories about their faculty.
I started doing comedy for several years. The first year of university I enrolled in a school of writing in Rome. I started writing sketches, doing stand-up comedies. For this reason, I already had a bit of experience behind me, and I thought university, especially the exams, were rich soils for sketches.
The exam itself already seems a sketch; when it starts, when it ends, it has a very precise narrative structure that applies to comedy. For this reason, I thought it was a good idea to write a web-series on the University. I enjoyed it a lot, also because it gave me the opportunity to play characters that is my greatest passion. I proposed it to the two directors of the series, which are Matteo Keffer and Maurizio Montesi, who were enthusiastic. We cooked up the characters and the direction, I wrote the scripts. Then went to the Dams to shot it.

And it was an overwhelming success!

Yes, it’s going really well. We are very happy and, to tell you the truth, we didn’t even expect it. It was like a leap of faith, because the format is a bit special. I am playing both characters in many sketches, and it was not granted that it could be appreciated. Probably, it lacked such a product; a truthfully series about university. I really enjoyed going on the technical, but making episodes that were comprehensible to everybody, even to those who don’t attend that faculty. Then, if you do, you enjoy twice because it touches yours business. We are really happy for how it is going. There was a great reception from the public.

Your characters have become viral phenomena. I think of the Professor of Philosophy, Amedeo La Potta , the assistant of Economics, Massimiliano Marzocca , or the Pips . How do you live the success of your “creatures”?

Now it seems to me I have more popularity than when I was on television. I must say I was very pleased that the characters have been received in this manner so dispassionate. A bit scared me the idea of ​​playing these characters, while instead it went really well. For example, there are people who write to me, “Lei non sa una sega!” (You don’t know damn all). A guy in Grosseto sent me a photo where they wrote on the wall “Guardie sbo, Infami sbo!” (Cops boom, infamous boom). It is funny. Then there are people such as the assistant of Economics, who is the monster of Via Cassia …

Well, it seems to me the typical Roman guy…

That is precisely the dirty Northern Rome. I come from those environments and I know them very well. He moves between Via Cassia, Vigna Clara and the Fleming. He goes to and fro Corso Francia. The last part always amuses me so much. It makes me laugh every time because it tells a lot of the character.

Look, what about the Lokka Ripka’s new album? When it will be released?

We’re working on it! We talked to them, to their agent, who gave us good news. The first single was a moderate success. Then, they are three good guys. They grew up in the underground scene of Helsinki, where they imposed immediately. We are on the right track. We have to see how much they want, but we are confident that we will come to a settlement that will satisfy everyone. The episode made them well-known, now let’s see how it goes.

Considering that Helsinki is the new Berlin, do you think Massimiliano Marzocca recommends it for the Easter holidays?

Well, I suggest you to look more Bangkok than Helsinki. Even if, to tell you the truth, you crappy eat in Bangkok. At the same time, I might suggest you Rio as well. There are some attractive destinations for this Holy Easter.

What about Cuba instead?

Well, Cuba just for the Morositas. I do not know if you have ever liked Cuba, but I suggest you the Morositas.

Turning serious, I wanted to ask you: how it was working with Sabina and Caterina Guzzanti?

Look, it was an honour to me. I was a great admirer of Corrado Sabina and Caterina, even before working with them.
Sabina was the first comic I’ve worked in television with. To me it was more than a satisfaction. In addition to working on TV, I did it with an extraordinary artist who gave me great confidence in the texts and interpretations. All authors gave me confidence. My pieces were not changed, which is something that does not happen very often on television. I am always grateful because it was a fantastic debut and I could not have asked for better.
With Caterina too I was fine. She is very talented and then she gave me the chance to play the Pips.

That’s a brilliant character!

The Pips is a great deal! He interprets reality in its own way and in the end he is always right. He has a distorted view of the world, but is careful in his remarks.

Of all these characters, what do you feel closest to?

Well, I feel closer to the student of Economics.  I’m a quiet guy, while the characters I play are very over the top.

Even chavs studying Law (Giurisprudenza) do laugh a lot …

Yes, they are very funny. I saw a lot of them in the faculty I study. I liked this approach very street to the Law. Those who came dressed as rapper and then took 30 marks to all the exams! From there then comes the episode.

When transposing things one sees in reality in comedy is the funniest thing.

Yes, of course. This is the observational approach to comedy, what I’ve always had and that amuses me so much. When you tell things the public recognizes what you’re talking about. Obviously, in “Esami” we made everything very surreal, as the Professor of Philosophy or the scene of Luigi Di Capua’s kidnapping. But, everything starts from an existing base and this mechanism allows us to recognize the things with which I’m building the episode.

I’m curious to hear your opinion on the use of light in Marzia Pellegrino’s photo.

Well, she has a masterful use, which earned her a solo show at MoMa, as you know. She is a great artist. We would like to organize a solo exhibit about Marzia Pellegrino in Rome. Maybe a drink in Monti, with wine glasses and photos of Marzia hung with chains to the wall.

That is a great idea! Whereas, which are Edoardo Ferrario’s projects for the future?

Now we have to finish to post “Esami’s” new episodes. For the future we will see, we have many projects. I will continue to do live shows in Rome. On April 30th I will be at the Locanda Atlantide and you’re all invited.

“The WalkMan” aims to give space and visibility to emerging young artists in any artistic field. What do you feel to suggest to those who have decided or are deciding to invest their lives in creativity?

To be very spontaneous and believe in the things you love. It is a very particular span, when the public is hungry for new content and freshness. The audience is changing and is very open to the original contents. You don’t have to be intimidated by proposing something that has never been proposed before. Something you don’t know how it will go because there is no previous reference. I suggest believing a lot in yourself, to pursue your own ideas. The period is interesting, fervent contents.
