Si può senza dubbio affermare che la nuova scena della musica non nasce più direttamente dai locali, ma dalle camerette di un numero sempre crescente di nuovi, giovani e brillanti artisti. Internet è diventato quindi il veicolo principale della musica amatoriale mondiale, e con un flusso così enorme di artisti e nuove idee non poteva che dare i natali e/o diffondere nuovissimi generi musicali, in alcuni casi anche nel mainstream.

VAPORWAVE
Questo genere è un po’ complesso da spiegare a parole. Ma immaginatevi di vivere gli anni ’80-’90 in una dimensione distorta e dilatata, e unire il tutto con elementi degli anni 2010. Ecco, questa è Vaporwave: un relitto abbandonato e nostalgico di un decennio consumistico. Genere inizialmente nato come parodia, consiste prevalentemente in canzoni retro di quei anni rallentate, remixate, e ricomposte in modo da renderle irriconoscibili, con un effetto straniante, psichedelico, ma anche molto melodico. Caratteristica essenziale di questo genere è l’estetica, composta da mashup grafici di statue antiche, luoghi esotici e tropicali, colori come il verde acqua e il rosa shocking, scritte in giapponese, e elementi vari (vhs, vecchi marchi commerciali), come per Macintosh Plus.
Questo bizzarro mix di musica e immagini è diventato parecchio popolare in Internet, con video da milioni di views, ma che è riuscito in parte a influenzare alcuni stilisti, e perfino Madonna ha incorporato alcuni degli elementi musicali in una delle sue ultime hit (Bitch I’m Madonna)
TRAP
La musica trap è la nuova deriva dell’hip-hop americano.
È una variante (non sempre) minimalistica ed elettronica del rap, con un’enfasi nei bassi, ma che ormai da almeno un paio di anni è onnipresente nelle classifiche americane. Nata originariamente nel circuito underground americano degli anni 2000, è arrivata alla ribalta negli anni 2010 grazie a giovani rapper che si sono “fatti le ossa” grazie ad internet, ottenendo una fama nazionale immediata, con contratti con le mayor discografiche, e popolarizzando il genere nel mondo. Tuttavia la trap non ha ancora del tutto conquistato il pubblico europeo, ma abbiamo alcuni casi di hit mondiali come CoCo di OT Genasis o l’Harlem Shake di Baauer
WITCH HOUSE
Immaginatevi il mondo dark e goth, che, strano a dirsi, si unisce all’anima elettronica e dance della house. Risultato di questa strana fusione è la witch house, l’house delle streghe.
In verità questo genere è un miscuglio di vari elementi, come la musica industrial, noise, elettronica, dance, gothic rock, colonne sonore horror, che danno origine a una musica decadente e maledetta, ma ballabile. Come i generi sopracitati, essa trova il suo trampolino di lancio da internet e dalla sua community, che ci ha portato artisti celebri come i Crystal Castles e (almeno in parte) Grimes. La witch house sta incominciando ad avere un declino rispetto agli anni passati, ma rimane ancora oggi abbastanza forte nella scena musicale moderna.

If we think about Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Spotify and a lot of other websites we can undoubtedly state that music nowadays doesn’t arise directly from clubs anymore, but instead it arises from the bedrooms of a larger and larger number of new, young and brilliant artists. Internet has become the main vehicle for spreading global avocational music, and with so huge a flow of artists and new ideas it has unavoidably given birth and/or spread new music genres, sometimes even in mainstream culture.
That’s why The Walkman will bring you to discover 3 new music genres, indissolubly linked to the World Wide Web.
VAPORWAVE
This genre is a bit difficult to explain by words. Just imagine living the 80-90s in a distorted and dilated dimension. Then, add some elements of 2010s. That is Vaporwave: an abandoned, nostalgic wreck of a consumeristic decade. This genre, initially born as a parody, consists mainly in retro songs of those years, which have been slowed down, remixed and then recomposed to make them unrecognizable with an estranging, psychedelic but also melodic effect.
An essential characteristic of this genre is aesthetic, which is composed by graphic mashups of ancient statues, exotic and tropical locations, colors like water-green or shocking-rose, Japanese writings and various elements (VHS, old commercial brands) as in Macintosh Plus.
This bizarre mix of music and images has become quite popular on the Internet and there are videos with millions of views. It has also influenced some stylists and even Madonna has incorporated some of its music elements in one of her latest hits ( Bitch I’m Madonna).
TRAP
Trap music is the new drift of American hip-hop. It is a (not always) minimalist and electronic variation of rap, by now omnipresent in American rankings since a couple of years ago. Originally born in the American underground circuit of the 2000s, it became famous in the 2010s thanks to a few young rappers who “learned the ropes” on the Internet and immediately gained worldwide popularity and contracts with recording majors, popularizing this genre in the world.
However, trap has not totally conquered the European audience yet, but we have some cases of global hits as CoCo by OT Genesis or the Harlem Shake by Bauer.
WITCH HOUSE
Imagine the dark and goth world combined with (it sounds strange) the electronic and dance soul of house music. Witch house is the result of this odd fusion.
Actually, this genre is a mix of various elements as industrial music, noise music, electronic music, dance music, gothic rock and horror soundtracks that originate a decadent, damned, but still danceable music. Like for the above mentioned genres, Internet and Internet communities have acted as a springboard for witch house, giving us popular artists as the Crystal Castles and, at least partially, Grimes. Witch house is now beginning to decline in comparison with the past years, but remains quite strong in the modern musical overview.
