“Ricordo quando da piccolo, giocando con foglie, fili d’erba e vecchi tappi di bottiglia, mi ritrovavo tra le mani degli oggetti che, senza pensarci, avevo creato. Al di là dell’istinto, però, ho avuto sempre presente l’esempio di mio padre, un bravissimo ebanista che dava il meglio di sé nell’ attenta lavorazione di pregevoli pezzi, spesso commissionati anche da fuori. Il desiderio di creare con le mani lo devo a lui.”
Queste le parole di Gianni De Benedittis riguardo ai primi approcci con la sua matrice creativa.
Il designer, maestro orafo pugliese, realizza modelli di alta gioielleria nel suo atelier a Lecce. FuturoRemoto è il nome della sua linea con la quale negli anni si èfatto notare per l’alta qualità delle sue creazioni, veri e propri pezzi unici, che nella loro unicità, racchiudono l’essenza del suo stile: gioielli provocanti e raffinati, audaci quanto estrosi, del tutto assuefacenti. Gioielli che superano il concetto stesso della gioielleria, poiché non decorano solamente il corpo, non sono solamente un vezzo per la vista ma, come delle opere d’arte contemporanea, sconvolgono nella loro essenza facendo riflettere. Per la loro magnificenza sono stati esposti ad innumerevoli mostre, in Italia e all’estero, come al dinamico Metropolitan Pavillon di New York.
“A me piacciono molto gli oggetti che creo per divertirmi o per provocare, perché sono libero di esprimere il mio estro ma, spesso, anche il mio atteggiamento di critica o di denuncia nei confronti della realtà, per esempio l’anello pannello solare. In genere, prediligo il gioiello cinetico perché è un oggetto in movimento, che asseconda l’incedere della donna che lo indossa e quindi manifesta vitalità, esprime un’anima. Un gioiello importante a cui sono affezionato, forse perché mi manca, è lo spirografo, tutto in oro e diamanti, acquistato a Roma da un arabo, subito dopo una sfilata.”
Rilevanti le collaborazioni attuate sia nel campo della moda che dello spettacolo. Dal 2009, il designer collabora con Gattinoni per la realizzazione dei gioielli per la collezione d’alta moda della Maison. Nel 2010 ha creato i preziosi accessori per la pellicola “Mine Vaganti” di Ferzan Ozpetek e nel 2011 per le rappresentazioni liriche dell”Aida”.
“Entrambe le esperienze sono interessanti” dice De Benedittis riguardo a moda e cinematografia, “ Lavorare con l’alta moda significa entrare in sintonia con il mood creativo dell’abito, per creare un accessorio complementare, quindi, eventualmente, anche diverso, ma che contribuisca a rendere l’outfit desiderato. Lavorare per il cinema e ancora di più per l’opera lirica, penso ad Aida o a La Traviata di Ozpetek, significa anche entrare nel contesto storico dell’ambientazione scenica, per riprodurne le forme, le nuances cromatiche e perfino le superfici delle pietre che, per esempio, per Aida ho dovuto antichizzare. E’ stato un interessante viaggio a ritroso nel tempo, un’occasione unica di documentazione”.
Nonostante la sua fervente attività lavorativa, a differenza della maggior parte dei designer, Gianni De Benedittis alle grandi città come Roma o Milano, preferisce avere come punto di riferimento la sua città natale: Lecce.
“Il mio lavoro continuo a svolgerlo a Lecce, prima di tutto perché sento di dovere molto a questa città, dove ci sono le mie prime clienti che hanno dato iniziale riconoscimento e cieca fiducia alle mie idee, in secondo luogo perché ritengo che le dimensioni di questa città, ma soprattutto la sua posizione, così confinata in un angolo d’Italia e la sua atmosfera costituiscano le condizioni migliori per un’efficace attività creativa. Ho comunque molti clienti in altre città d’Italia e quando devo, o semplicemente voglio, perché ne avverto il bisogno, mi sposto nei luoghi desiderati.”
E’ dunque sorprendente vedere che, nonostante abbia ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti e premi, il più importante dei quali aver vinto WION per la categoria accessori nel 2007, la sua vita cambiata, restando legata alle sue origini e soprattutto con “i piedi per terra”, focalizzando tutto sulla creazione delle sue gioie.
“L’assegnazione del prestigioso premio di Vogue Italia è stato l’evento che mi ha fatto conoscere a livello nazionale e internazionale. Da quel momento tutto è cambiato, le occasioni di nuove performance sono arrivate numerose, così come la partecipazione a eventi e mostre, nonché le prestigiose collaborazioni con grandi personaggi del mondo del cinema e della moda”
Noi di TheWalkMan ci poniamo come obiettivo quello di lasciare spazio e visibilità ai giovani emergenti in qualsiasi campo artistico, per questo abbiamo chiesto a Gianni De Benedittis cosa sente di suggerire a chi ha deciso o sta decidendo di investire la propria vita nella creatività.
“E’ molto importante dare libero sfogo all’istintivo bisogno di creare, avendo il coraggio di osare e di aprirsi sempre a nuove contaminazioni. Per un artista, creare può essere una forma di terapia, una necessità della mente, un’impellenza dell’anima”

“I remember when I was a child and I used to play with leaves, blades of grass, old bottle cap, and I used to find in my hands the objects I made without even thinking about it. But beyond the instinct, I have always remembered the example of my father, a talented worker in ebony that did his best working on items that were often ordered abroad. I owe him the talent of creating by the hands.”
This is what Gianni De Benedittis said about his early approaches with creativity.
Gianni De Benedittis is a designer and goldsmith from Puglia that realizes jewels in his atelier in Lecce. FuturoRemoto is the name of his line with which, through years, draws attention for the high quality of his creations; some unique pieces that in their uniqueness hold the essence of his style: refined and provocative jewels, audacious as much as capricious and totally addicting. Jewels which exceed the concept of jewellery itself, because they don’t only decorate the body and they are not only a charm for the eyes but as some contemporary artwork they upset you in their essence making you thinking. Indeed, for their magnificence, they were shown in countless exhibitions in Italy and abroad, as for example at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York.
“I really like the objects I create to amuse myself or to provoke, because I am free to express not only my inspiration but also a criticism or denunciation of reality, for example the solar panel ring. In general, I prefer a kinetic jewel because is it a shifting object which supports the walk of the woman that wears it and because of this shows vitality and expresses a soul. An important object which I’m fond of probably because I miss it is a spirograph made of gold and diamonds which was bought by an Arabic after a fashion show.”
He made notable collaborations both in fashion and in the show business. Since 2009 he collaborates with Gattinoni for the creation of jewels for the haute couture collection of the Maison. In 2010 he made precious accessory for Ferzan Ozpetek’s “Mine Vaganti”and in 2011 for the “Aida”. And about which one between the cinematographic and the fashion experience he prefers he thinks that:
“Both the experiences where interesting. To work with the haute couture means to be in tune with the creative mood of the outfit, to create a complementary accessory and because of this in case even different, but which could contribute in the making of the outfit. To work with cinema and above all with opera, I think of Ozpetek’s Aida or La Traviata, means also to enter in the historical background of the setting, to reproduce its shapes, chromatic nuance and even the surface of the stones that I had to make antiques. It was an interesting trip back in time and an unique occasion of research.”
In spite of his fervent work, contrary to most of designers that prefer bigger cities as Rome or Milan, Gianni prefers to have as a reference point his hometown: Lecce.
“I keep on carrying out my work in Lecce first of all because I feel I owe a lot to this city, where my first customers gave me a starting recognition and blind trust to my ideas; then because in my opinion the dimensions of this city but especially its position, confined in a corner of Italy and its atmosphere build up the best conditions for an effective creative activity. Despite this, I have many customers in other Italian cities. When I have or when I want to, because I feel this need, I move to the places desired; this happens often even in the same month.”
It is therefore surprising to see that despite he received many honors and awards, the most important of which was the WION for accessory in 2007, he hasn’t changed himself, remaining bound to his origins and above all “down to heart”, working and focusing all his inspirations in the creations of his jewels.
“The assignment of the prestigious Vogue Italia award was the event that introduced me to a national and international level. Since then everything has changed, I received many opportunities for new performances, as well as the participation at events and exhibitions, in addition to prestigious collaborations with celebrities with the world of films and fashion.”
We all from the WalkMan aim to give space and visibility to emerging young artists in every artistic field, that’s the reason why we asked Gianni De Benedittis what does he feel to suggest to who decided or are deciding to invest their lives in creativity…
“It is really important to free the instinctive need to create, to have the courage to dare and to be always opened to new contaminations. For an artist to create can be a form of therapy, a need of the mind, an urgency of the soul…”
